Writer, designer and store owner Jenny Lyon talks to us about her business in and around the South Melbourne Market. Klopper is a quirky gift and homeware store located in the South Melbourne Market that focuses on Australian-made products. With many of the other traders here, Klopper shares a sustainable philosophy. Jenny sources stunning locally-made decorative products, at times you wouldn't believe they're made with recycled materials.
What sort of products and/or services can we expect from you, and how do you source them?
I am trying to stick with local design with a bit of vintage stuff thrown in. It's actually a bit tricky - I always want to offer something fresh to my darling customers, but Melbourne is a small place. There are only so many people making things. I tend to stick with a few ripper lines that everyone knows I carry, and then mix it up with funny little things I have found at the local fĂȘte.
How does working within the SO:ME Space enhance your business, and what are the best aspects of the space?
I am not actually within that space, but I have found that since the SO:ME Space has opened, we have a younger, foxier crowd at the market!
Why would you advocate visitors to the space?
Because there's great things to buy, and it's pretty good people watching too.
What is your professional background?
What is your professional background?
I am a contributing editor at Green Magazine- I edit the Upfront section, which focuses on beautiful sustainable design to inspire our readers. I LOVE my job.
Where do you think we're going with regards to the way we shop? Are we pulling back from the cheap thrills of online buying? Are we moving back to the notion of supporting local trade easily, or is it a battle?

I truly believe that people just love a story and if you can offer a background story to whatever they're looking at - they'll love it! They don't have to even buy it, but they'll appreciate that story, and next time they need something they might come and see you. Good personal service will win every time, I reckon.
It's really boring, but I just love the changing weather here. I grew up in Perth and it is pretty consistent over there - not many surprises. Melbourne's weather is so changeable - it actually causes people to lose their marbles. It's unseasonably warm at the moment and the general public have lost it, I saw bikini tops and hot-pants today. So funny.
